The government is taking special measures to boost the development of Visakhapatnam, which is gradually transforming into the state's capital city. Efforts are underway to construct Metro pillars that reflect the state's history, culture, and tradition. The construction of the 76.90 km Light Metro project is in progress, which will connect 42 stations and cost approximately Rs. 9,699 crore. The government has ordered swift action on funding arrangements to accelerate progress.

As of 2021, Visakhapatnam has a population of over 25 lakhs, making it essential to establish a metro rail system. The government is keen on providing convenient transportation options for the public, reducing traffic congestion, and saving time. Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has shown interest in prioritizing metro rail construction.

Plans include the construction of three corridors, with the first corridor spanning from Steel Plant Gate to Kommadi Junction (34.40 km), the second from Gurudwara to Post Office (5.07 km), and the third from Bhagangapatnam to Chinnawaltair (6.75 km). Furthermore, tram carriages will be introduced on Beach Road, and efforts are being made to connect other areas to the metro rail network.

The government aims to complete the first phase of the metro rail project by January 15th of the coming year. This initiative is expected to provide significant convenience to the public, improve transportation, and alleviate traffic issues in Visakhapatnam.
